Follow this tutorial to learn how to remove acrylic nails with acetone. You won’t need to head to a nail salon for this service anymore!

I will talk about how long to soak acrylic nails in acetone and some DIY acrylic nail removal tips.

This soaking method is good for acrylic nails, soft gel nails, gels with “soak off” on the label, soft gel nail tips, and plastic nail tips.

Tools and materials:

  • Plastic bowl (acetone-safe)
  • Acetone
  • Nail file or cuticle remover
  • E-file
  • Nail clippers
Trimming nails

1. Trim your nails

Use nail clippers to snip off your nail tips at the weakest point of your nail, on the sidewall, just above your fingertip. Snip into each side and then remove the tip.

If you have long natural nails under your tips, then trim the tips where your natural nails end.

Filing top coat

2. File off the top coat

Use your e-file with a coarse bit to remove the top layer of gel polish.

Tip: Be cautious when using an e-file. Start on a lower speed and then work up to a higher speed if necessary.

Soaking nails

3. Soak and scrape your nails

Fill your bowl with acetone and soak your nails for about 15 minutes.

Scraping nails

If you are not patient enough to wait 15 minutes, then after a few minutes you can use a cuticle remover to begin scraping off the product from your nails.

Do as much as you can on one nail, and then put it back in the bowl to soak while you do the next nail. Continue soaking and scraping.

Be careful scraping around your nail plate. Go gently so you don’t cause any damage.

Using nail file

You can also use a nail file to help scrape away some product.

Using e-file

Once the product is removed, use a fine band on your e-file to smooth out your nails.

Buffing nail

Then buff the nail surface.

Adding cuticle oil

4. Finish with oil

Drench your cuticles with nail oil and rub it in to restore moisture to your nails.
