I had an old pair of denim pants that I was bored with. Then I thrifted a curtain panel with an oriental design. So I put them together and here’s how I did it.

Tools and materials:

  • Denim pants
  • Thrifted curtain
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Placing the panel

1. Place the panel

I laid the panel over the pants leg and decided where I wanted the design to be.

I trimmed away some of the excess curtain fabric and pinned the panel into position.

Cutting

2. Cut the pants

I cut the pants leg and the curtain together, so I knew the insert would fit.

I made sure to leave a seam allowance on both so I could sew them together easily.

Cutting

I removed most of one front pants leg from the crotch down.

I repeated the same method on the front of the other leg, just from the knee.

Sewing panels

3. Sew the panels

I turned the pants wrong side out to sew the panels, so I would have a clean seam on the right side.

Make sure you join the pieces with the right sides facing each other.

My finished pants are certainly unique! I’m actually delighted with how they came out.

Of course you can adapt this method to replace panels on any garment.

What do you think of my upcycled denim pants?
