Black Cat Polymer Clay Earrings

Black cats tend to make their annual debut in October for all things Halloween. Being a lover of black cats (I have TWO) – I think these handmade polymer clay earrings are perfect all year round. They are a fantastic project for someone who is a beginner with polymer clay. This post is sponsored but the ideas and opinions are my own.

Materials and Supplies Needed

• Sculpey Bake Shop Clay (Black, White, Green)
• Sculpey Project Mat
• Cutters for Clay
• Rolling Pin Tool
• Plastic Knife Tool
• Cookie Sheet
• Oven to Bake Clay
• Sculpey Glaze
• Baby Wipes for Cleaning Hands
• 2 Small Eye Hooks
• 2 Dangle Earring Bases\

Directions

Start with CLEAN hands and clean surface. The Sculpey Bake Shop clay is one of my favorites because it is so soft and easy to work with. The baby wipes come in super handy between colors to keep hands clean. Work on the project mat.

Step One

Soften some black Bake Shop clay (2 bars is sufficient) by rolling in hands. Use the rolling pin to flatten it to about 1/8 inch thick.

Step Two

Use cutters to cut out a head and two ears for each earring. These cutters could be different shapes. Both of these cutters are from Sculpey. The circle is perfect for the head and the cutter for the ears is from the Irregular Rectangle Cutting Set.

Step Three

Press the ears to the circle head and use fingers to gently mold them into one piece.

Step Four

Use the same irregular triangle cutter to cut two eyes from Bake Shop white clay – also about 1/8 inch thick. Then roll a little green out and make two eyeballs – one for each earring. Gently press these pieces together into the black cat head.

Step Five

Push a small eye hook into the top of each cat – between the ears.

Step Six

Put the project mat with the earrings on it onto a baking sheet. Bake the earrings at 275 degrees for about 12 minutes. If they are thicker, they might need a little more time. I recommend testing your oven and bake times with scraps before baking your first masterpiece.

Once the earrings come out of the oven, let them cool COMPLETELY before moving on to the next step.

Step Seven

Paint a think layer of glaze onto the earring then let it dry.

Once the glaze is dry, slide the cats onto the earring base through the eye hook hole. You could always use other jewelry findings if you have beading supplies and the like.
