How to Make a Jumpsuit Out of a Long Dress Quickly & Easily
Are you ready for another awesome upcycle? Today, I’ll be showing you how to make a jumpsuit from this maxi dress! So, before you throw out that unused maxi dress, consider doing this quick tutorial, and I assure you, You’ll love how this DIY jumpsuit turns out. Let’s get started.
Tools and materials:
- Maxi dress
- Best fitting jeans or leggings
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pins
- Matching thread
1. Mark the hips
First thing’s first; while wearing the maxi dress, mark where your hips start. Then, take it off, and lay it down with the side seams in the middle lining up.
2. Trace the pants
Now, take your favorite pair of leggings, jeggings, or skinny jeans and place them on the dress. Fold them in half with the back crotch facing out, as far as it will go. Line the other side up with the center seam, too.
Trace around the shape of the pants, leaving about an inch of seam allowance. Like this, you’ll have plenty of seam allowance, and make sure the DIY jumpsuit won't be too tight.
When you get to the top part of the pants where your hips would be, draw your line outward.
3. Cut out the pattern
Cut along the lines.
4. Fold and cut the other side
Then, fold the maxi dress over to the uncut side and line it up.
Use the cut-out side to cut the other side. This way, everything will be even.
Look at that! You’ve successfully cut a DIY jumpsuit from a dress! Turn the dress so that the side seams face the side.
5. Sew the pant legs
Align the inner leg seams and pin to secure. Then, take it to your sewing machine. Since this is a stretchy fabric, I used a straight stitch and finished it off with a zigzag stitch (I don't have an overlocker).
A zigzag stitch is key when it comes to sewing stretchy materials, so don’t skip it!

I'm definitely doing this.. I bought 3 maxi-dresses thinking I'd wear em, never did tho😆 Plus I've been wanting a jumpsuit or 2, but couldn't justify spending the money for em bc i really don't need em. That coupled with knowing I have so many things in my closet that still have the tags on em I just won't do it! But THIS I WILL DO and feel awsome about it! I sew all the time, , & can't believe I've never thought of this myself - THANK YOU!
