How to Turn Pants Into a Skirt: Easy DIY Corduroy Skirt Tutorial

Today, we’re doing another transformation tutorial and I’ll be showing you how to make a skirt from pants. I’ve had a pair of corduroy pants since 2016 and I haven’t worn them before as I don’t like the trumpet legs or the loose-fitting.
I saw someone wearing a corduroy skirt and I immediately thought of making a DIY corduroy skirt. It’s super easy to transform and I love to wear it. If you also want to know how to make a skirt out of pants, keep reading, and let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Old jeans
- Scissors
- Seam ripper
- Fabric glue
- Sewing materials
- Fabric pins
1. Cut at the desired length
Fold the pants in half, making sure the hems are aligned. Then, cut at the desired length. I cut mine at knee level because I’ll need some fabric for allowance to hem the bottom of the skirt.
2. Use seam rippers to open the side seams
Next, open up the pants from the inseam, using a seam ripper. Don’t cut it open with scissors, because you need the pants’ seam to make it easy to glue down and if you’re sewing, you need to follow the previous stitches.
3. Cut the crotch seam
Turn the pants inside out and flip over to the back.
There, cut open the crotch seam about five inches upwards, or just until the point where you can overlap the sides and it lays down flat like so.
4. Cut the bottom part of a pant leg into two
Take one of the bottom parts of the leg that you cut off, and cut it open from both the inseam and the outer seam. Just cut it into two pieces.
5. Place the fabric under the skirt opening
Place one side of the fabric under the opening at the front to cover it up. Adjust it properly and smooth out the folds. This will fill in the space to give the skirt more room and it’ll be tight when you’re working.
6. Glue the seams down
Apply fabric glue at the edge of the seams.
Fold them in and press them down.
7. Repeat Step 6 on the back
Flip the skirt over and repeat step 6 on the back. Place the fabric on the opening and glue down the seams, ensuring everything lays flat.
8. Cut off excess fabric
Once you’re done applying the glue and tucking in the seams, cut off the excess at the bottom of the skirt.
9. Pin and sew
The fabric glue I’m using requires 24 hours to fully dry and achieve its maximum strength, but I wanted to wear the skirt immediately, so I secured the skirt by pinning and sewing in the same manner as I glued it down.
10. Cut off excess fabric
When you’re done sewing, cut off the excess fabric inside the skirt.
11. Hem
Put the skirt on, and if you’re satisfied with the length, you can hem the bottom of the skirt by folding twice and sewing it with a straight stitch.
