I picked up a pair of pants for $3 at a thrift store. They fit me in the waist but were a little bit big on the legs, so I thought it would be fun to make a skirt out of them.

In this DIY, I’m going to show you how to turn pants into a skirt. If you were looking for your next creative DIY project, you’ve just found it here. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

Seam ripping the pants

1. Seam rip

Start by seam ripping all of those seams in the crotch area as well as seam ripping the pant leg seam.

Cutting the pants

2. Cut

When you get to the desired length that you want your skirt to be, add on some extra length for seam allowance. Then proceed to cut along the pants.

If your pants have a lining, then cut the lining open, just as you have cut the outer part of the pants.

3. Mark the pants

Turn the pants inside out and mark how long you want your skirt to be, leaving yourself about an inch (2.5cm) of seam allowance.

Sewing the new seams

4. Sew and serge

Sew the seams straight down to where you want your skirt to stop, and also serge the extra edges off on each side.

Hemming the skirt

5. Hem

Now turn the now skirt right side out and mark where you want the skirt to end, and then cut along there. Proceed to serge along the raw edge, then fold it up, pin it, and hem.

6. Make adjustments

Try on the skirt and see if it fits you well or if you need to take it in a little bit more. If you do need to take it in, pinch all the extra fabric at the back, draw a mark on either side of the fabric and connect them in a v-shape.

Proceed to sew straight down and tape it off at the bottom of the v. Then serge the extra fabric off.

Remember to lay the inside seam open flat, iron it down, and then add some zigzag stitches on the edges to prevent fraying.

Pressing the seams

7. Iron

To make your skirt look nice and finished, press the seams down with an iron.

Adding fringe to the DIY skirt

8. Add fringe

At this stage, I thought that the skirt looked cute but a little boring, so I decided to add some fringe.

I put the fringe straight down, asymmetrically on the front of the skirt, and then wrapped it all the way around the bottom, which I then sewed down with a straight stitch.
