After I saw a pastel tie dye skirt in an online store, I was inspired to make my own with a t-shirt upcycle.

It wouldn't surprise me to know that most of us have an old tie dye t-shirt that's seen better days and this is the perfect fun and easy project for it.

The t-shirt needs to be a fairly loose style to provide enough material for this upcycle.

The measurements given fit a 25 inch waist and give a finished skirt length of 17 inches.

Tools and materials:

  • Loose-fitting tie dye t-shirt
  • 1 inch wide elastic
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
Cutting t-shirt

1. Measure and cut

Turn your t-shirt wrong side out and fold it in half lengthways, matching the side seams.

Measure and cut a strip 6.5 inches wide across the lower edge and put it aside.

Marked t-shirt

Measure 11.5 inches from the bottom of the remaining portion of the t-shirt and draw a straight line across the body of the fabric.

Mark 1.5 inches down from that line across the t-shirt for the elastic casing.

Place a mark 8.5 inches from the lower line for the hip line and mark 9 inches from the folded edge to show the waistline.

Cutting t-shirt

Cut along the upper line and the waistline and unfold the fabric.

Assembling the skirt

2. Assemble the skirt

Join the short edges of the two layers, taking a half inch seam allowance.

Assembling the skirt

Place one end of the 6.5 inch wide strip on to the folded t-shirt remnant and cut around it to create two small panels.

Cut off the side seams of the longer strip.

Assembling the skirt

Sew each small panel between two short edges of the longer panel with the right sides together, to extend it equally on both sides. This will become the skirt ruffle.

Mark the center side points of the ruffle.

Assembling the skirt

Place the long raw edge of the ruffle against one long edge of the deeper panel.

Match the center side marks to the side seams of the panel and pin the two together with the right sides facing, making pin tucks in the ruffle to fit.

Sew the ruffle in place.

Waistband

3. Waistband

Cut a piece of elastic 26 inches long. Overlap the ends and sew them together securely and mark the center opposite the join.

Turn the top edge of the skirt to the wrong side by 1.5 inches.

Pin the center mark on the elastic to one side seam and the join to the other side seam.

Stretching the elastic to fit, pin it to the top edge of the skirt inside the casing.

Waistband

Sew the casing in place close to the lower edge.

Now you've turned an old, baggy t-shirt into a cute, versatile and trendy summer skirt.

Upcycled t-shirts are great projects for beginners because the fabric doesn't fray and is easy to work with.

My t-shirt was actually a thrifted find but choose one from your own closet to practice with if this is your first time.

I'd love to see your results if you try this. Drop me a comment below and let me know how you get on.
