Hey, everyone! In this tutorial, I'm excited to show you how I transformed an old dress into a trendy street flip skater skirt.

If you want to do this thrift flip, and turn a dress into a skirt, follow along for step-by-step instructions.

Tools and materials:

  • Old dress
  • 1.5-inch-wide elastic band
  • Zigzag elastic band (for option 2)
  • Measuring tape
  • Thread (matching the color of your fabric)
  • Marker or pen
  • Straight ruler
  • Chalk
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing pins
  • Iron and ironing board for pressing
  • Topstitching thread (optional)
Cutting fabric

1. Mark and cut

Start with an old dress, and the first thing you need to do is mark where you want the skirt waist to begin.

Using a straight ruler and chalk, mark the waist line position and cut off the excess material from the upper part of the dress.

Making waistband

2. Make the waistband

Cut 1½-inch-wide elastic to a length that is about two inches smaller than your waist circumference.

Making waistband

Sew the ends of the elastic together, creating a circle.

3. Attach the waistband

With right sides facing, pin the elastic band to the right-side skirt waist, attaching the elastic to the side seams of the skirt first, then, securing it with pins all around.

Take your time to ensure a neat and professional finish.

Attaching waistband

Head to your sewing machine and stitch around the waistband, using a straight stitch with a quarter-inch seam allowance.

Then, for a more refined look, topstitch the elastic on the right side using a zigzag stitch.

Your first option is complete, and you can rock the skirt as is.

Adding elastic straps

4. Option 2 - adding elastic straps

Measure the length of your skirt from top to bottom, then mark half of the length on both sides.

Adding elastic straps

Cut two pieces of 1½-inch elastic to the same length as half your skirt length, and mark the center on each piece of elastic.

With your skirt inside-out, pin one end of one elastic to the top side seam of your skirt, at the bottom edge of the waistband.

Then, pin the hallway point of the elastic to the half-way mark on your skirt.

Adding elastic straps

Pin the other end of the elastic to the bottom of your skirt, about an inch above the bottom hem.

Adding elastic straps

Repeat on the other side seam of your skirt.
