Midi Skirt From Scratch

Silk skirts are so trendy right now! I decided to sew one from scratch and I love how it turned out! Check out this tutorial to learn all you need to know to make a stunning, silk midi skirt for yourself.
Tools and materials:
- Silk fabric
- Clips
- Iron
- Rotary cutter
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Elastic
- Pins
- Chalk
Fold the fabric
To get the best stretch from the fabric, grab one corner of the fabric and fold it over. Use clips to hold the fold in place.
Trace a skirt
Use a skirt that fits you well as a pattern. If you prefer to make your own pattern, make sure to take all the relevant measurements.
Trace around the skirt adding about a 3-inch seam allowance.
Then go ahead and cut the fabric. I like to use a rotary cutter because it frays the fabric less.
Trim the waistline
Trim the waistline at a slight curve. Then copy this piece to cut another exact piece for the back of the skirt.
Sew the sides
Place the two pieces, wrong sides together, and clip them in place.
Then go ahead and sew the side seams with a straight stitch. Make sure to leave at least ½ an inch of seam allowance.
Trim the remaining seam allowance with a pair of scissors.
Press the seams
Next, make sure to press the side seams with an iron.
Make a waistband
After pressing, measure your waist and then cut an elastic adding 1 inch.
Sew the band together and then mark 4 equal markings around the band. Do the same on the waistline of the skirt.
Go ahead and pin on the band matching up the markings. Sew on the band using a zig-zag stitch.
Turn out the waistband and topstitch. I used black elastic so I didn’t have to hide it in the fabric but if you use colorful elastic you may want to tuck it in and sew.
Hem the skirt
Double fold the bottom of the skirt and hem it.
This silk midi skirt is sleek and elegant! What color silk fabric would you use to sew this skirt? Share in the comments below!
