My friend had a hoodie with oil stains on it that just wouldn’t come out, so we decided to work a little magic to bring it back to life.

For this DIY, you’ll need a hoodie and a knitted sweater that are the same size and with seams that align. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Hoodie
  • Knitted sweater
  • Pins
  • Fabric marker
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
Drawing squiggly lines

1. Draw squiggly lines

First, slip the knitted sweater inside the hoodie and pin the layers together.

Then start mapping out the squiggly lines that will mark where the knit patches need to go.

Cutting

2. Cut along the lines

Proceed to cut along the squiggly lines. To balance out the design, I recommend also drawing lines and cutting on the sleeves as well.

3. Work on the back

Turn the hoodie over and start working on the design on the back.

Sewing

4. Sew

Proceed to top stitch along the lines you’ve cut to attach the hoodie to the knitted sweater.

Trimming

5. Cut off excess fabric

After stitching on all the patches, turn the hoodie inside out and cut all the excess fabric off.

Here is the finished hoodie - it’s really thick and looks super well-made.

I’m so glad that we got to preserve its life and give it a bit more character. This is what upcycling a design is all about!
