If you have picked up a pair of jeans at your local thrift store, or have some old jeans in your closet, and you want to give those jeans the titled pockets look, then follow along.

If you’re a beginner sewer, this project is for you!

Tools and materials:

  • Old jeans
  • Seam ripper
  • Sewing machine
  • Denim-strength sewing needle
  • Denim-strength thread
  • Scissors
Removing pockets

1. Remove pockets

The first thing you need to know is remove the existing pockets from your jeans, using a seam ripper.

Now your jeans look like this.

The darker blue is the original wash of the jeans. You can see how the rest of the jeans have faded.

Sewing prep

2. Prepare for sewing

Before you start sewing, make sure that you are using a denim needle on your sewing machine.

I am using a 90 over 14 needle, but ideally you want to use a 100 over 16 needle in order to get through the thick denim.

Sewing prep

You should also use thread made specifically for denim, for the extra strength it provides.

Reattaching pockets

3. Reattach your pockets

Pin your pockets back onto your jeans, placing them at an angle.

Don’t worry about the darker wash showing around the edges.

Reattaching pockets

Sew the pockets in place, following both stitch lines that are already on the pockets.

Hemming jeans

4. Hem your jeans (optional)

If you need or want to shorten your jeans, simply safety-pin them to your desired length.

Hemming jeans

Cut off the excess fabric, leaving about 1 inch for a cuff.
