Easy T-Shirt Cutting Hack: How to Make a DIY Wrap and Tie Crop Top
Today, I’m going to show you how I took a thrifted long-sleeved t-shirt and turned it into a nice DIY wrap and tie crop top. Although I ended up finishing the edges with my sewing machine, really you could recreate this top without sewing a single stitch!
If you’re interested in learning how to make a wrap top out of a t-shirt in a super-easy way, keep reading.
Tools and materials:
- Long-sleeve t-shirt
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pins or clips
- Sewing machine
This is the long-sleeved t-shirt I found at the thrift store and decided to transform into a DIY wrap top.
1. Cut down the middle
Cut straight down the middle of the front of the top only. It doesn’t matter if it’s perfect, you can just freehand it.
2. Cut out the lower back
Next, you’re going to cut out the lower back. I wanted it to be very even - I was very picky about that. So, I used a ruler to make sure the slits on either side were even before I cut across.
3. Cut four strips
Now, use that back piece and cut out four strips. These are the strips that are going to help you wrap your top in the way you want it to look.
4. Cut a hole for the wrap
Next, cut a hole in the middle of the front part of the shirt that’s hanging low. Cut a little hole in there because that’s where the wrap tie will go through.
5. Tie the straps
Then, feed the strips through the hole and tie them. Make sure you cut off the excess on the short side. Tie a second strip onto the first one for a longer tie.
6. Sew down the raw edges
Really, you could stop here and make this a DIY no-sew wrap top, but I’m a perfectionist, so I wanted to sew down all the raw edges to give the top a cleaner finish.
7. DIY wrap and tie crop top tutorial
Here is the finished DIY wrap and tie crop top! As you can see, I also shortened the sleeves a little so they were three-quarter length. You can wrap the top how you like. I wrapped the ties around my back, then secured them in the front.
Let me know what you think of this DIY transformation and whether you’ll try out this tutorial!

It seems like you need to add a step that says tie a strip to the bottom center of each front side. Then tie a second strip to the end of the first strp if you want more length to wrap around the waist. These crisscross in front and back to meet again in the front for your final knot or bow.
I would also like to see the back of your wrap tee and a bit about how you tucked the bottom up and snug around the midriff.
