How to DIY a Cute and Easy Pinterest-inspired Top
I saw this cute top on Pinterest that I really love. It doesn’t need any sewing at all, unless you want to finish the edges. It’s a DIY crop top that you cut from a t-shirt.
I bought my t-shirt from Walmart for a few dollars. If you already have one that you don’t wear, you can use that and won’t even have to buy one. They're easy to find in thrift shops as well.
I made my cut-outs directly on to the fabric without measuring or anything. If you’re nervous about doing that, you can draw out your design first with a ruler and fabric marker and then cut it out.
Tools and materials:
- Short or long sleeved t-shirt
- Scissors
- Ruler (optional)
- Fabric marker (optional)
1. Top section
Lay the t-shirt out flat and match the front and back hemlines.
Cut off one of the sleeves completely by cutting around the armhole.
Cut a diagonal line from about 1 inch below the armhole of the other sleeve to about 1 inch inside the edge of the shoulder on the opposite side.
2. Side section
Cut a V shape across the t-shirt, on the same side as the last cut.
Make your first cut on the side seam between 3 to 6 inches from the top, and cut straight across to the center of the t-shirt.
Start your next cut about 3 inches below the first and angle it up to meet it in the center, making the point of the V.
3. Bottom section
Cut straight across the bottom of the t-shirt above the hem.
This is a one-shouldered crop top, so make it the length that you want and feel comfortable with.
4. Make the ties
Cut open the side seam between the bottom of the t-shirt and the V shape you cut out, to make the side ties.
Cut open the rest of the side seam, between the top of the V and the diagonal cut.
5. Wear
Wear your new DIY crop top by putting one arm through the armhole. Tie the top set of ties under your other arm. Turn in the raw edges.
Fold up the bottom of the shirt to the length you want and knot the side ties around your waist.
Pull the ties hard lengthways as you knot them. They will stretch quite a lot.
Cute Pinterest-inspired top
My top didn’t turn out exactly the same as the Pinterest top, but I think it came out super cute anyway.
My cutting was pretty ragged because my scissors weren’t sharp enough, but it doesn’t show when I wear the top.
T-shirt fabric doesn’t fray so there’s no need to finish the edges unless you really want to.
This is such a quick and simple top and so cheap to make, you can easily cut out several in an hour and even sell them.
Now I really want to know what you think of it and how yours turns out. Drop me a comment below please - I love to hear from you!
