Do you like bows as much as I do? I think they’re so cute! I’m going to show you step by step how I made a gorgeous bow detailed top. It was very fun to make and super easy as well, a great DIY if you’re looking for something that isn’t too complicated. Let’s jump on in!

Tools and materials:

  • 1.5 yards of fabric
  • A sleeveless top
  • Tape measure
  • Pins
  • Elastic

Cut the top

Take your fabric and fold it in half with the right sides facing each other. You will need a sleeveless top to use as a template to copy the shape of it for the top we are making. Place your sleeveless top on the fabric and determine your preferred length (if you want to make your top slightly longer or shorter than the template, you can do so). Cut the fabric leaving a ¼ inch seam all the way around.

Pin the pieces

Pin both pieces together along the shoulders and the sides of the top. Next, curve the bottom of the top; you can fold the top in half to ensure that you get an even cut on both sides.

Sew the top

Sew the parts of the top you have pinned using a zigzag stitch. Proceed to hem the neckline, armholes, and bottom of the top. To do this, fold the edges ¼ inch and pin in place. Put your sewing machine foot on the raw edge and sew using a zigzag stitch. The raw edges are now neatly finished.

Make the bows

Now to spice up the top with some bows! To make the bows, you need to cut out rectangular shapes from your fabric; you’ll want to cut out quite a lot of these. Place the right side of the rectangle up. Then pinch the material from the center and use your other hand to fan out the sides. Hand sew the bows together. You can make as many of them as you like.

Sew bows to top

With the top turned so that the right side faces up, start placing bows along the neckline. Sew into place with needle and thread. Continue to place bows along the bottom of the top and scattered throughout the middle of the top. As you can see, I made two different designs. One of them has a deeper neckline, and the detailing on the bottom is also different. There is flexibility in this DIY for you can choose how you would like to arrange the bows on your top.

Check out the finished product! I really love the way that it looks on. It is such a fun and playful piece that puts a smile on my face and brightens up my day. I’ll be wearing the top a lot this summer.
