Brandy Melville Inspired Top

Hello loves! The next stop on my DIY sewing journey is this Brandy Melville Inspired top. In this tutorial, I upcycled an old top and created a very cute ruched tee. This is a fun and easy DIY project so go ahead and give it a try!
Tools and materials:
- Knit/cotton shirt
- ¼ inch elastic
- Scissors
- Pins/tape
- Sewing machine
To start off, you will need a top. I recommend a cotton top but knit works as well. I was lucky since my top already had a v-neck.
Measure and cut the elastic
First, you need to measure from the bottom of the v-neck to where you want to ruching to end. Then go ahead and cut your elastic to size. My elastic was 3.5 inches but the area I wanted to be ruched was 5 inches. The reason you need to cut the elastic shorter is that when you sew, you actually stretch the elastic.
Sew on the elastic
Here, I used tape to hold down the elastic but you can always use pins to hold it in place.
It’s important to make sure that your bobbin thread is the same color as your top. When you sew on the elastic, do so with a straight stitch and hold the elastic as you sew.
Shorten the sleeves
I decided to make the sleeves shorter but you can skip this step if you like the sleeves on your top or if they are already short.
This was a super easy thrift flip! I am so happy with how this ruched top turned out! Share your thoughts on this DIY project in the comments below!
