DIY the Easiest Top for Summer
I found this fabulous print fabric which is perfect for a summer crop top.
This is a great project for beginners because no advanced sewing skills are required. Take a look at how I create this simple top.
Tools and materials:
- Cotton fabric
- 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) wide elastic
- Scissors
- Pins
- Ruler
- Safety pin
- Sewing machine
- Seam guide presser foot (optional)
- Serger (optional)
1. Sew the side seams
Cut two pieces of fabric, each 18 inches by 36 inches (45 by 90 cm).
Join the short edges together and finish them on your serger or with a zigzag or overlock stitch on your sewing machine.
2. Elastic casing
Sew a basting stitch half an inch (1 cm) from the top edge. Turn the edge over at the line and iron it flat.
Sew the edge down to make a casing for the elastic. Leave a small opening near a side seam.
3. Hem
Turn up a double hem at the lower edge and sew it in place.
4. Elasticated edge
Cut a length of elastic to fit around your upper bust less about 2 inches (5 cm).
Thread the elastic through the upper casing.
Knot or sew the ends of the elastic together and sew the opening closed.
5. Straps
The top was a bit too long for me so I cut off about 4.5 inches (11 cm) and hemmed it again.
I used the scrap fabric for the straps.
I cut the fabric in half lengthways and sewed the long edges together with the right side inside, following the hem line.
I turned the straps right side out and sewed them to the top edge at the front and back.
