Have you just washed a lovely new pair of pajamas and noticed that now the collar facing has bunched, won’t lie flat anymore, and is driving you crazy?

This happens often with convertible collars: the ones that have the lapel folded outward.

If you love ironing your pajamas to keep the lapel lining smooth and flat, then go ahead.

But, if you’re not into that, then follow along as I’ll show you how to alter a shirt neckline to prevent the facing from bunching and shifting around in the first place.

Tools and materials:

  • Iron
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Pajamas with convertible collar
  • Thread (matching the color of your pajamas)
  • Optional: Ironing board or flat surface for ironing
Preparing pajamas

1. Prepare your pajamas

Start by ironing your pajamas to smooth out the front facing.

I know I just said I was not into ironing my pajamas, but I’ll do it just this once so that I won’t ever have to again!

This step ensures that the fabric is flat and easier to work with.

Pinning fabric

2. Pinning

Take some pins and place them horizontally across the facing to hold it in place.

Ensure the facing lays smoothly as you want it to without any bunching.

Checking pocket placement

3. Check pocket placement

If the facing crosses over a pocket, you need to sew around it without stitching through it.

Move the pocket out of the way when you place the pins, and then when you are sewing, skip over the edge next the pocket, and pick up again after the pocket.

4. Iron and pin the other side

Repeat steps 1 to 3 on the other side of the pajama top, ensuring that both sides are smooth and flat.

Sewing

5. Sewing

Sew along the edge of the facing, right on top of the serged line. If you encounter a pocket, carefully sew around it without stitching through it.

Ironing fabric

6. Finishing touches

After sewing, give the pajamas one final press to set the thread and ensure everything lays nicely.

The facing should now be securely attached and no longer bunch up after washing.
