Today, I’m recreating a favorite, jumbo bow hairstyle with my daughter. It looks great with curly or straight hair and it’s such a fun, timeless look.

Follow along to see how it’s done!

Tools and materials:

  • Comb
  • Hairspray (optional)
  • Brush
  • Hair tie
  • XL cheer bow with clip
  • 1” curling wand
Parting hair

1. Make 2 straight parts from your arches

Start with straight hair. Right at the arch of your eyebrows create 2 parts.

If the parts are at an angle, go in with a tail comb to make the lines go straight back.

Here’s what a straight back part looks like:

2. Create a high ponytail

Collect the hair between the parts into a tight high ponytail. Secure with an elastic.

3. Add volume to the ponytail

Use your comb to tease sections of the ponytail, starting with the back section.

Place the comb in the middle of the section and lightly drag it down a couple of times.

Creating high ponytail

Continue with more sections until your ponytail is voluminous and a bit frizzy.

Then grab the base with one hand and with the comb laying flat, gently smooth the outer layer of the ponytail.

Adding volume

4. Add more volume!

Push your ponytail to the side.

Grab a section of hair underneath the ponytail’s base and tease it with the comb from the middle to the roots.

Adding volume

Drop the hair forward, laying it on the ponytail and continue adding volume to another section of hair underneath.

You might need 1-2 sections, depending on the amount of hair.

Adding volume

Pull those sections back in place and lightly brush it with the comb straight.

The idea is just to blend the teased and sleek hair.

Adding volume

Add an XL clip bow and this straight-hair look is finished!

5. Make waves

Wrap a small section of hair by your temple back around a 1” curling wand, giving it a twist as you go and leaving out the end.

Let it sit for a few seconds. If you tap part of the hair and it feels too hot to touch, that’s how you’ll know this section is done.

Curling hair

Drop it and leave it in your hand for a couple more seconds until it cools down.

If your hair doesn’t hold curls well, you can apply hairspray at this point.

Curling hair

For the next section, repeat this process but wrap the hair forward.

Switch with backward and forward curling for all sections of your hair.

When you’re finished, give the curls a shake with your fingers.

Shaking curls

Touch up the teasing, if necessary.

Here’s the final look with curly waves:

If you’re trying this style on your child with thinner hair, use a lower setting on the iron.
