Wearing My Mom's Clothes: How to Style Items From Your Mom's Closet

Today I'm going to be raiding my mom's closet and wearing my mom's clothes. What does that mean you may ask, well let me try to explain. Last time I went to visit my parents I borrowed five items from my mom's wardrobe that I will be trying to style on me with my own clothing. I'm going to be trying to make outfits that I would actually wear, something that's trendy and that's my style.

Mom's maxi skirt

1. Maxi skirt

The first piece of my mom's clothing that I'm going to be styling is this brown leather print maxi skirt. It has a tie waist so I should be able to get it to fit me around my waist. My thoughts but this is it looks rather boho and I wanted to go with that whole aesthetic.

Here I’ve styled it with a little white crop top and some tan lace-up flats. I'm actually really digging this look and I seriously want to steal this skirt for myself. I styled the look with a red bracelet, some boho earrings and a straw hat. I am getting glamorous poolside vibes. The skirt itself I would probably rate a 5 out of 10, but I love the outfit that I created with it and think its a 9.5 out of 10

Mom's tunic

2. Tunic

The next piece of clothing from my mom's wardrobe is this black, white and blush pink patterned tunic.

I’ve styled it with the sleeves rolled up and some black leggings underneath. For shoes, I’m wearing my mid-calf tan boots. To accessorize, I added a scarf and a black beret. I think that this would also look good with black jeans instead of leggings. I quite like the top, I would give it 7 out of 10 and then the outfit that I created with it I'd have to rate a 7 as well, I just wasn’t feeling it so much.

Mom's sheer tunic top

3. Tunic top

The next piece of clothing is very similar to the last one, it's another long pattern tunic top. This one is quite a bit longer than the other one though, so I was hoping I could wear it as a dress. The only issue is that it is quite see-through so I need to wear something underneath it.

This is what the dress looks like on, and I’m wearing a gray bodycon dress underneath. It certainly is very oversized so I added a belt to cinch my waist and give me a little bit more shape. I also rolled up the sleeves a bit and used some hair band elastics to make sure it would stay in place. These little touches make it look more like a dress and less like a massive shirt. For shoes, I added some thigh-high black boots. This outfit makes me feel quite glamorous. A big floppy hat and dangly earrings finish off the look. The final outfit looks very extravagant but in a good way, I’m feeling very luxurious like I could be on holiday.

The detailing on the back is also really cute.

If this tunic dress was in my size I might buy something like this so I would rate this piece an 8 out of 10 and as for the outfit that I created with it, I'm a pretty big fan so would give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Mom's flannel shirt

4. Flannel shirt

Next we have a good old plaid flannel shirt.

I styled the shirt with some distressed denim high-waisted shorts. For the top, I’m wearing a little black lace bralette underneath white drop armhole sleeve. I really like how the bralette peeks through the arm holes and you can see the detail of the two straps underneath. It gives a little bit of a feminine touch to a pretty tough looking outfit with combat boots.

I also like how the shirt looks around my waist. I also added a choker necklace.

In terms of rating the shirt, the piece itself is ok, I mean it’s a flannel shirt, how much can you like a flannel shirt. The color and the pattern is not what I would choose for my flannel shirt, I personally prefer the white ones but I would rate it 5 out of 10; it’s pretty standard. But I really liked the outfit, I would give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Mom's oversized cardigan

5. Oversized cardigan

The final item that I stole from my mom's wardrobe is this gray knit oversized long cardigan.

I styled the cardigan with my black distressed skinny jeans and a black and white striped crop top. Some white sneakers finish off the look. In terms of the fit, there is oversized and then there is oversized. I tried to make it look a little bit more like it's on purpose by rolling up the sleeves and wearing it off my shoulders. To accessorize, I added a chunky white watch, some big stud earrings, and a cap.

The cardigan is really big on me but the piece itself I really like as is so I would probably rate it a 9 out of 10; I would totally wear it if it was in my size. As for the outfit, I think I did a pretty good job so rate the outfit an 8 out of 10.

Wearing my mom's clothes

I had a lot of fun raiding my mom’s closet and styling her clothes and I hope you enjoyed seeing what outfits I could create with her pieces. Maybe I’ve inspired you to raid your mom’s closet? This was a really fun challenge that required a lot of creativity and I would definitely recommend it.

I like that you are open minded enough to even try wearing your mom's clothes lol. The outfits that you made are very creative. The very over sized cardigan is my favorite choice.
