How to Wear Pantone's Color of the Year: Viva Magenta

A new year is always filled with optimism. Nothing nothing expresses these feelings like color. Pantone, the leading forecaster of global color trends, released its annual "Color of the Year," a color they chose to reflect what's happening in global culture and people's moods.

For 2023, Pantone selected Viva Magenta (18-1750), a deep red with undertones of pink and purple, as an expression of strength meant to encourage expression and make a statement.

The color is definitely bold, and I think it hits it on the head what people are feeling. Everywhere we see trends of maximalism and bursts of color as people return to their own form of normalcy after the pandemic. It's time to get loud! And what better way than to do it with color?

While Viva Magenta is a beautiful vibrant hue, anyone who has tried to match shades of red in separates or accessories knows it can be tough to get a perfect match because of the many variations. Viva Magenta can lean into a purple-ish red, almost burgundy or a deep, pink-tinged shade of crimson. When I look at it, I see a rich, deep shade of red lipstick and go with that. I happened to have a few things in my closet in that color. And of course, I wear them with red lipstick! It's also an excellent color for Valentine's Day celebrations.

Here are a few ways to wear Pantone's Color of the Year, Viva Magenta:

Go Monochrome

Wearing an entire outfit of Viva Magenta can be a real show-stopper. Who doesn't hear the song " Lady in Red" when going for this look? Finding separates that match could be a challenge. It might be easier to find a solid color dress with matching accessories to get this look. I have a matching t-shirt and swing skirt that fit the bill.  Shop Viva Magenta dress.

Play With Contrasting Colors

If you look at a color wheel, the contrasting color for reds are greens. For the deep shade of red that is Viva Magenta, it is a deep, forest color of green that is the counterpart.

Contrasting colors work well in an outfit for playful and sometimes bold results. Here the combination is subdued but still striking in that it takes the eye a little bit of work to see how the colors go together.  Shop green separate.

Wear a Print

Since it can sometimes be hard to nail an exact shade of Viva Magenta red, your best bet is to look for a print with colors as close to the hue as possible. Here the floral print of this dress includes purples, pinks and red and in there, of course, is our Viva Magenta that stands out in a fun, feminine way.  Shop print dress with Viva Magenta.

Now that you know how to wear Pantone's Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, how will you style it?
