Turn An Old Jacket Into A Cute Fall Vest

This is definitely my favorite upcycle of the season, and I’m hoping you’ll love it too! I thrifted this winter jacket while visiting family in Riga, Latvia. It’s very cold there, and I forgot my usual jacket (oops!) I wasn’t being too picky, and this puffy jacket worked well temporarily. But now that we’re back home, I don’t want to get rid of the jacket, but these sleeves are just too short for long-term wear.

I don’t own a cute winter vest though… so I’m sure you can see how the idea came to me.

Today, I’ll be showing you how easy it is to turn an old winter jacket into a cute vest for fall!

Step One:

Carefully remove the sleeves. Use a small pair of sewing scissors or a seam ripper to take apart that stitching that binds both the outer sleeve and the lining sleeve to the body of the jacket.

Step Two:

Repeat this step on the other sleeve.

Step Three:

Using matching thread and a needle, use a simple backstitch* (by hand) to close the edges of the arm holes. If you have a sewing machine, feel free to use a simple straight stitch to do the job more quickly.

*This diagram provides a detailed and easy-to-follow guide to a simple backstitch.

Step Four:

Style it!

I was so surprised with how easy, fast, and stylish this piece was. I think you’ll be excited about it too. So give it a try and let me know how it goes.
