Here's how to make a voluminous ponytail with bouncy waves. Follow along as I take you through the process step by step.

Tools and materials:

  • Heat protectant
  • Curl spray
  • Curler
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Texture spray
  • Hair tie
  • Claw clip
Prepping hair

1. Prep hair

Start with freshly washed dried hair and apply a heat protectant and a curl spray.

Curling hair

2. Curl hair

Next, curl your hair. I’m using a curler with a 1.25-inch thickness.

A technique I've always used is the twist technique. As you wrap the hair around the barrel, you also twist the hair at the base and then wrap it again and then twist the hair again.

I find that this is the best way for my curls to hold their shape.

Shaking hair out

3. Shake out hair

Once you remove the hair from the barre, shake it while keeping it in the spiral.

This allows the cool air to flow throughout the curl and brings that temperature down so it sets in place.

Combing hair

4. Comb hair

Then comb it out with a wide tooth comb and give your hair a little shake.

Adding texture spray

5. Add texture spray

If you want a bit of extra volume, use dry volume texture spray.

Tying ponytail

6. Tie it in a ponytail

Grasp the hair, tie it off at the crown, and place a tiny claw clip underneath the ponytail for volume
