In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make Pura Vida bracelets. I used to love wearing friendship bracelets as a child, and I’m so happy that these accessories have come around again, this time for adults.

Grab your colored cord, and let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Cord in three colors (either waxed polyester cord or satin nylon cord)
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Lighter
Nine cords

1. Cut the cords

Start by cutting nine cords that measure 20cm (7.8 inches) each.

You will need three of each color, I did yellow, white, and pink. Tie all the cords together at the top and set them aside.

Cutting two longer cords

2. Cut two longer cords

Cut another two pieces of cord that measure 25cm (9.8 inches) each.

Tying an open knot

3. Tie an open knot

Take one of the longer cords and tie an open knot.

Tying a knot around the cords

4. Tie a knot around the cords

Slide the cords inside the knot and pull it tightly. Then tie another knot on top.

Trimming the ends

5. Trim the ends

Slide the knot closer to the edge and trim the ends.

Melting one end

6. Melt one end

Use a lighter to carefully and slowly melt them together.

Both ends melted

7. Melt the other end

Do the same for the other side.

Twisting the cords

8. Twist the cords on one side

Grab one of the sides and twist the cords.

Once you’ve twisted one, hold it with your other hand while you twist the other. Then twist both cords together and make a knot at the end to hold it.

Twisting the cords

9. Twist the cords of the other side

Once again, do the same for the other side.

Making the closure

10. Make the closure

To make the closure part, lay both end pieces together and use another cord to make a series of square knots around it.

Tie a bunch of them and once you're happy with it, cut the ends, leaving a little bit of cord sticking out, and then melt that cord.

How to make Pura Vida bracelets

Here is the finished string bracelet, as well as another one that I made in a different color. I like to layer them together.

These bracelets were so easy to make, they look super trendy, and they take me back to my childhood days.

If you end up with extra thread, you can always make an anklet or additional bracelets as well.
