Tools and materials:

  • Old jeans
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron-on decorative patches
Cutting jeans

1. Cut your jeans

Cut both side seams of your jeans from the hem to about mid-thigh (or lower if you prefer), because this upcycle will make your jean legs wider.

Finishing raw edges

2. Finish the raw edges

Hem the cut edges so they are nice and clean.

Finishing raw edges

Finish with a small zigzag stitch.

Adding decorative patches

3. Add decorative patches

Choose some large decorative iron-on patches.

Adding decorative patches

They usually have a thin layer of glue on the back.

For this upcycle, we’re not actually going to iron the patches on, so you can remove that layer of glue with your hands.

Adding decorative patches

Position the patches so they just overlap on each side of the slit on the side of your jeans.

Adding decorative patches

Hand-sew the patches in place.

Butterfly jean upcycle

Sew 4 to 5 patches down the whole side of your jeans, and repeat on the other leg.

From where do get the extra material you use to be sewn on the sides? The material where you have to sew the payches?

I don’t think she used any extra material. The dark fabric you are seeing in the first picture, is actually just the inside of the Jean. If you check out the last picture you see her exposed leg with the butterfly patches “holding” the cut part together. I hope this makes sense.
