Measuring the length of the shorts

1. Make the overall shorts sewing pattern

Place your folded jeans on the fabric’s fold and measure your desired length. Trace out the shape and add a ¼-inch seam allowance as you go along.

Use this piece as a template to cut the same again.

2. Assemble the pants

You should have four pieces altogether. Match the front and back pieces together. Pin the crotch areas and sew with a zigzag stitch. Ensure that the fabric is right sides facing.

Pinning the inner and outer seams

Place both pieces together, right sides facing. Pin the outer and inner seams and sew using a zigzag stitch.

Folding the top edge

Turn the shorts right sides out, and fold the top edge in twice. The first fold is to hide the raw edge, and the second fold should be bigger than the first. Turn the shorts right sides in and sew around the edge with a straight stitch.

3. Make the top pattern

Place a good-fitting sleeveless shirt on the fold of your fabric, as pictured above. Fold the sides, so it’s easy to trace a straight line. Then, measure up to where your belly button is; that should be the length of the top.

Tracing the sides

Trace the sides and neckline, with a ¼-inch seam allowance for the sides.

Cutting out the front and back pieces

Carefully cut the front and back pieces.

Folding the raw edges

4. Assemble the top

Fold all the raw edges; this includes the sides, necklines, and bottom of the front and back pieces.

Double-folding the bottom

The bottom pieces should be folded in twice, though.

Sewing the edges

Then, sew using a straight stitch.

Sewing the top to the bottom

5. Assemble the DIY overall shorts

Place the top front pieces right sides together in the center of the shorts so that the seams of the top’s bottom and the shorts' waistline align. Pin and sew.

Sewing the back to the bottom

Turn the whole piece around and repeat the same for the back piece.

Hemming the shorts

Next, hem the shorts.

Attaching buttons

6. Attach the buttons

Then, hand-sew the press buttons on the inside of the shoulder. You should have 3 for each shoulder.
