Have you ever wanted to sew a DIY custom jean jacket and make it look exactly how you wanted?

I used the Ditto pattern system to project my pattern with my specific measurements. I found this really easy but you can use any jean jacket pattern you like and add your own custom details, if you'd prefer.

I added a self-designed fabric and machine embroidery to make mine unique.

This project is suitable for an advanced beginner to intermediate sewist.

Tools and materials:

  • Jean jacket pattern
  • Main woven or denim fabric
  • Contrast fabric
  • Machine embroidery thread
  • Buttons
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
Cutting fabric

1. Cut out

Print out your chosen pattern in your size and cut out your fabric.

I cut the under collar and an extra inside pocket from contrast fabric.

Finishing edges

2. Finish edges

Serge all the raw edges, or finish them with a zigzag or overlock stitch.

Body

3. Body

Join the center back seam and press the seam open.

Sew the back shoulder darts and front bust darts.

Join the fronts to the back at the shoulders.

Sleeves

4. Sleeves

Gather the top of the sleeve head between the marks and set the sleeves into the open armholes.

Join the sleeve and side seams in one.

Collar and facings

5. Collar and facings

Sew the undercollar to the collar with right sides together and turn them right side out.

Press and top stitch.

Collar and facings

Attach the collar to the right side of the neckline.

Join the facings at the center back and sew them together at the shoulders.

Stitch them around the neckline of the jacket.

Embroidery

6. Embroidery (optional)

For a very unique touch, add embroidery to the front and back of the jacket.

If you do this, center the embroidery over the back and side seams.

Hem

7. Hem

Hem the bottom of the jacket and the sleeves.

Top stitch up the center front.

Buttons and buttonholes

8. Buttons and buttonholes

I used 4 fairly large buttons on the front of my jacket.

Make the buttonholes first, then hand or machine sew the buttons in place.

Inner patch pocket

9. Inner patch pocket (optional)

I cut this from the contrast fabric.

Turn under and press all the edges and top stitch the top edge.

Inner patch pocket

Sew the pocket to the inside of the jacket front.

Use a toning bobbin thread, as the stitching will show on the right side.

It didn't take much in the way of customization to make this DIY denim jacket completely unique.

You could go further and add matching buttons on the sleeves or even line the whole jacked with the contrast fabric.

I hope this project has inspired you to add those special touches to your garments.
