Transitional Clothing for Summer to Fall

The changing seasons always bring mixed feelings of melancholy. There’s the letting go of summer pleasures we’ve gotten used to – warm temperatures, wearing shorts, sipping lemonade on sunny days. Then, getting excited for what’s to come – a crisp chill in the air, crunchy leaves under our feet, and pumpkin spice!

But those weeks at the end of August and the beginning of September, when it’s not quite fall yet (until officially September 21st), can be a conundrum of what to wear. Depending on where you live, it still can be quite warm outside. But then overnight, a cold front blows in, and suddenly, it’s sweater weather, and the leaves on the trees start turning their bonfire of colors.

I usually reach for light layers and a little more coverage during these weeks to transition through the change.

Here are some ideas for transitional clothing for summer to fall.

Light Jackets

I’m a sucker for a cute jacket with a fun texture or print. But I never feel like I wear them enough because the spring and fall shoulder seasons are so short. So now’s your chance! Throw on a fun light jacket in a quirky style over any outfit (even shorts!) like this vintage, cropped-cut suit jacket with three-quarter sleeves in a rich color. Shop jackets.

Closed-Toe Shoes

Mules, flats, and loafers feel right for this time when sandals seem too light, and boots are just too heavy. Slip on a closed-toe shoe for a little protection if the temperature suddenly drops. You can pair them with ankle socks as we get deeper into the fall season. Don’t forget to add another great transitional accessory – scarves! You’ll look very season-appropriate. Shop closed-toe shoes.

Long Sweaters

A long sweater feels more fall-like than a traditional waist-length sweater. It gives a duster-like flow and a little more coverage. Find one in a light material so it doesn’t get too warm during the day. You’ll be cozy and stylish and ready for anything. Shop long sweaters.

Shawls

When you still want to wear your summer dresses but need a layer that you can easily take off if it gets too warm, you can’t go wrong with a shawl. Pick one in a light fabric such as cotton or silk. You can also search for a pashmina or scarf wrap. Just drape it over your shoulders, and you’re good to go. This can save you as it gets darker earlier in the day, and suddenly, it’s cool at night. Shop shawls.

Now that you know how to wear transitional clothing from summer to fall, which one will you try?
