Glamorous Vintage Waves Hairdo Tutorial
I put my own spin on the classic pageboy hairstyle by adding soft vintage waves!
Follow along to recreate this fun and fabulous classic vintage hairstyle with a twist. Let's get started.
Tools and materials:
- Curling tool of choice
- Thermal setting spray
- Denman brush
- Teasing brush
- Smoothing serum
- Hair wax
- Bobby pins
- Hairspray
- Straight pins
- Hand mirror
1. Curl your hair
You choose the curling method–pin curls, curling iron or rollers.
Make sure that the direction of the curls around the sides are curled under while those at the crown of your head, from your forehead, corner to corner, are curled backward.
I used a ½” iron with thermal setting spray.
Also, at the back, only curl the bottom portion of the hair, at the base of the neck.
This also goes for the curls on the sides, since we want the hair adjacent to the crown to lay flat.
This will ensure that the curls are centered around the ends of the hair.
2. Brush out the curls
Release your curls.
Then brush out the bangs with a denman brush in a backward motion.
Next, brush out the ends. If you’ve done a heat set as opposed to a wet set, make sure you don’t overbrush the hair because that could undo those curls.
After the brush through, you should have the general shape that we need.
3. Apply smoothing serum
Put a few drops of smoothing serum in your hands and rub them together.
Then, run your fingers through your hair to apply it, focusing on the ends. This will provide nourishment and shine to the hair.
4. Shape the curls
Then brush the hair to direct the curl to the ends of the hair.
Brush the hair around your hand to give it that great shape.
5. Smooth flyaways
Rub a small amount of wax between your fingers and then apply it to tame the flyaways.
6. Secure the curl under your ear
Use 2 bobby pins in a criss-cross to secure the hair right behind your ear.
Play with the curl to elongate it so it’s not all stuck behind the ear. Then add a bit of hairspray.
7. Add height to the top
To add height to the vintage hairstyle, backcomb small sections of hair from the top, center, spraying and separating the hair before moving on to the next section.
Do this until you reach the other corner of your forehead.
8. Shape the curls on the other side
While the hairspray dries, brush out the other side of your hair.
Then, shape the ends around your finger like you did on the first side. Add hairspray when it’s in the right shape.
9. Smooth the top and secure the waves
Use the teasing brush to smooth the exterior of the top section of hair.
While doing this, lay your hand under the wave of the hair to maintain the curled shape.
Place a hair pin or clip to keep the height while the hair dries and sets.
Then use your fingers to perfect the shape.
Use more clips to hold the wave shapes in place.
10. Address the hair in the back
Use a hand mirror to see what’s going on at the back of your head. Brush to make sure everything is smooth.
Then, use clips to create an indent at the base of the neck.
Tuck the curls under as you go with your hands and the teasing brush, if needed.
Then add hairspray to fully cement the hair in the back.
Be sure to lift up the curls to spray underneath as well.
Then, let everything marinate to really set this vintage updo in place. Do your makeup and get dressed.
11. Touch up
After removing all the clips, tweak any areas of curls that might not be sitting right.
For example, I found a gap between the curls that I want to “marry” together.
To do this, grab both sections together and backcomb the ends from underneath.
Once they are joined, smooth out the top gently. Avoid fully brushing through because that would make the gap re-emerge.
Then add more hairspray to keep it in place.
Add a flower if you’d like. Here’s the final result of our vintage wave hairstyle:
