Easy DIY Makeup Bag Tutorial
Today, I’m showing you how to make this easy makeup bag with a zipper and contrast lining.
Use any non-stretch fabric you like, even vinyl. You only need two fat quarters.
Tools and materials:
- 18 x 21 inches (fat quarter) or 45 x 53 cm of fabric and contrast lining
- 12 inch (30 cm) zipper
- Sticky tape
- Scissors
- Iron
- Pins
- Ruler
- Fabric marker
- Sewing machine
- Zipper foot
1. Prepare the fabric and lining
Fold the fabric and lining in half and trim them to 8 inches by 10 inches (20 by 25 cm).
Cut two pieces each 2 inches (5 cm) long from the folded scrap lining.
Press the shorter ends towards the center.
2. Prepare zipper
Measure 8 inches (20 cm) along the zipper.
Open the zipper and tape the top and bottom.
Cut the zipper at the marks.
Sew the two pieces of lining over the ends of the tape.
3. Insert the zipper
Place the zipper right side up centrally on the top edge of the right side of the lining.
Put the outer fabric on top, right side down, and sew close to the zipper teeth using your zipper foot.
Open out the fabric and lining right side up.
Put the edge of the outer fabric on the free edge of the zipper tape.
Fold the lining up to the underside of the tape and sew through the three layers.
4. Side seams
Open the zipper.
Sew the side seams of the outer and lining separately.
Leave a small opening on one side of the lining.
Turn the bag right side out through the opening and sew the opening closed.
Tuck the lining inside the bag.
Topstitching the zipper seams stops the fabric getting caught in the teeth, so it’s an extra step you can take if you want.
