I’m going through a bang phase and have been cutting and trimming my own bangs! I feel I’m in a pretty good position to teach you how to cut bangs at home (even if you don’t have bangs already). I’ll also show you how to style bangs with a flat iron. Let’s get banging!

Tools and materials:

  • Hair cutting scissors
  • Comb or brush
  • Clip
  • Flat iron

These are the tools you’ll need to cut your bangs. First up are a pair of hair cutting scissors: it’s crucial to use hair scissors and not paper scissors as they can cause split ends. Next, you’ll need a comb or brush. I’m using one with a pointed tail as it’ll help me section my hair (you can also use a pen). Then you’ll need a clip or hair elastic and a flat iron to quickly style your bangs. This is not a must but I think bangs look better when quickly sliding them through the iron.

The perfect length for bangs

Before we get into the tutorial, I want to chat about different rules about cutting bangs. The sweet spot length you should aim for is below your eyebrows and above your eyes. This type of length is universal and complementary to most if not all faces. Many people cut their bangs way too short and end up not liking them.

Sectioning hair

1. Section your hair

Using a pointed tool, section off your hair starting from the top of your crown, as shown. Then, follow that line toward the side of your head and pull forward that section to the front. Repeat on the other side, too.

Pulling hair to the front

If you have long hair, you should have longer hair out in front. If you have bangs as I do, this is what you should have. Ensure that your sectioned hairline is straight and not zig-zaggy.

Cutting the excess first

2. Cut the excess

Twist the ends and cut off any excess using the tip of your nose as a cutting point. Then, brush your hair out.

Cutting straight across

3. Cut across

I like to cut my hair right above my eyes. Once you have determined the length you want, go ahead and cut with a sturdy hand. Carry on right across.

Creating a curve at the edges

I also like my bangs to go up a little and curve around the edges. To do this, split your bangs right in the middle on start cutting on one side. Go right between your eye and eyebrow and cut it at a downward angle. Repeat on the other side.

Cleaning up the ends

Clean up the ends where needed.

Styling bangs with a flat iron

4. Style with a flat iron

Brush your bangs and then go in with a straight iron. Push your bangs down gently and slide the flat iron through. Next, do the same to the middle part of your bangs.

How to style freshly-cut bangs

Once I poof up my hair, my bangs sit right above my eyes and that’s where I like it to be. As my hair grows out on the sides, I also trim around the part that covers my eyes.

I love it, I think bangs are so cute! I hope you feel a lot more comfortable cutting your own bangs after this tutorial. The best tip I can give you is to always start longer than you expect and trim it down until you have your desired length. I also recommend going for a curved shape; longer on the sides and shorter in the middle. Thanks for joining me!
