Today, I want to show you how to make wrap pants very quickly and easily. You need a fabric that drapes well, like the crepe I use here.

The measurements I give will fit European sizes 38 - 42, but they're easy to adapt to other sizes too.

This project is extremely suitable for beginners, as the sewing techniques used are very straightforward.

Tools and materials:

  • 2.5 yards (2.3 m) fabric
  • Ruler
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Plastic straw
  • Rolled hem presser foot (optional)
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)

1. Wrap pants sewing pattern

Fold your fabric in half lengthways and then widthways, so it measures 41 inches (104 cm) wide by 21 inches (53 cm) long when folded.

Lay it on a flat surface with the main fold away from you and the open edges nearest you and to your left.

Measure 4 inches (10 cm) down and 12 inches (30 cm) across from the top right corner.

Draw a rectangle connecting the two points and curve the inner corner.

Draw a curve across the bottom left corner.

Cut out both curves.

Cut open the two folds on the right edge, to separate the fabric into two pieces.

Sewing the seams

2. Sew the seams

Open out the two pieces and place one on top of the other, with the right sides together.

Pin and sew them together around the U shaped crotch seam.

Finish the raw edges with a serger or overlock or zigzag stitch.

Sewing the seams

Sew a narrow double rolled hem around the side and bottom edges of both pieces, using a rolled hem presser foot if you have one.

Sewing waist darts

3. Sew waist darts

Place the two pieces together with the right sides facing. Measure 6 inches (15 cm) from one side of the crotch seam along the top edge.

Sewing waist darts

Fold the top layer of fabric at an angle so the side edge touches the mark.

Draw a straight line down the folded edge and pin, to create a dart.

Measure 6 inches (15 cm) from the other side of the crotch seam along the top edge.

Sewing waist darts

Fold the top layer of fabric at that mark and measure 1.2 inches (3 cm) from the fold across the top edge and 5 inches (13 cm) down the fold.

Join the two marks with an angled line to make a dart.

Sewing waist darts

Sew both darts in place. Press the darts away from the crotch seam and sew them down at the top edge.

Making the waist ties

4. Make the waist ties

Cut two strips of fabric, each 59 inches (150 cm) wide by 3 inches (8 cm) long.

Pin and sew a strip centrally to the top edge of each piece, with the right sides together.

Making the waist ties

Fold the free ends in half with the wrong sides facing.

Sew them together along the long edge and sew the short edge diagonally.

Making the waist ties

Trim the seam allowance on the short edge and turn each tie right side out using a plastic straw.

Making the waist ties

Fold the rest of the waistband to the inside. Turn under a narrow hem and sew in place.
