DIY Marimekko Shoes

I'm a huge fan of the Finnish Design House Marimekko, and craft and decorate my home with their prints. I even wear some of the prints.

I decided to upcycle some old plain sneakers with their prints to make some sunny Marimekko shoes.

What you need for this craft are some plain white sneakers. If you don't have any you can normally pick some up really cheaply.

Other items needed are paper napkins in your favorite design. Mod Podge and masking tape.

First, remove the laces from the shoes.

Then tape the bits of the shoe that you don't want to be decoupaged, such as the soles.

Next, napkins are normally 3ply. You only want to use the top printed layer, so separate this from the rest of the paper napkin.

Then cut out the design shapes you want. With me, these were the pretty poppy flowers of the Marimekko Unikko Design.

Using Mod Podge, I glued these paper napkin flowers one by one to the sneakers.

When the shoes are finished, cover the outside with another coat of Mod Podge to create a protective varnish. I recommend using a waterproof Mod Podge and 2 coats.

I loved these shoes so much that I made another 2 pairs in different Marimekko Patterns that you can see on the blog.

If you want to see all the wonderful patterns that Marimekko Napkins come in you should check out the Marimekko Tin Can planter display I made for my garden.
