How to DIY a Cute Denim Corset Belt

Don’t throw away your ripped or dated jeans! I made a denim corset belt out of leftover jeans and the result is a unique piece that will upgrade your wardrobe.

Tools and materials:

  • Leftover jeans
  • Seam ripper
  • Fabric scissors
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Measuring tool
  • Hole puncher belt tool
  • Eyelet and grommet pieces
  • Eyelet setting plier
  • Black laces (cord)
Un-sewing

1. Un-sew!

With a leg piece from leftover jeans, use a seam ripper to take out the seams, creating a flat piece of denim. Start with a piece like this:


Once you’ve opened the seams, you two pieces:

2. Straighten the edges

Cut off the raw edges all around both pieces, making them straight.

3. Fold

Taking one of the pieces, fold it in half down the vertical.

Next, open that up and fold each of the halves inward, flipping back the area that once had a seam, like this:

4. Sketch curves and sew

To give shape to the belt, trace curved lines with tailor’s chalk on either end of this folded up denim piece.

Pin in place and then sew along the sketched curves.

After sewing the curves, your fabric should look like this:

5. Sew the ends

Next, pin down the flaps at the end and sew them down on your sewing machine.

6. Fray the edges

Using your seam rippers and your hands, pull at the long edges of the denim to tease out the fibers, creating a fray above the seam that you sewed.

7. Mark and punch the holes

Using tailor’s chalk and a measuring tool, mark where you want the holes for the laces.

Then, align a hole puncher belt tool above each mark and squeeze with both hands to make the holes.

8. Insert eyelets and grommets

Place the eyelets in each hole.

Then secure them with grommets using an eyelet setting plier.

9. Thread the cord

Thread the cord through the holes and your DIY corset belt is complete!
