Did you ever think you could make a fashionable purse out of a basketball? Follow this tutorial and learn how to make a basketball purse that will wow your friends! This design is inspired by NYC artist Andrea Bergard's basketball bags and clutches. Let's get started on this DIY basketball purse!

Tools and materials:

  • Basketball
  • 14-inch zipper
  • E6000 glue
  • Clamps
  • Exacto knife
  • 20-inch chain
  • Snap tape
  • Strap (optional)
  • #5 leather needle (or upholstery needle)
  • Regular or upholstery thread
Cutting open the basketball to make a purse

1. Make the basketball purse opening

Locate the point on the basketball where you want your purse to open. Use an Exacto knife to cut through the basketball, making an opening the same size as your zipper.

Trimming the edges of the opening

Trim the edges of your cut so they are smooth.

2. Attach the zipper

Apply glue to the edges of your cut on the outside of the basketball and attach your zipper to the glue. Work a little at a time so the glue doesn’t dry before the zipper has been placed on it.

Make sure the teeth of the zipper are not lying against the basketball – you want the zipper to be able to open and close freely.

As you attach the zipper, use small clamps to keep it in place until the glue dries.

3. Attach the straps

Cut off two pieces of snap tape from your snap tape roll. These will hold the strap on your purse. Glue the two pieces of snap tape to your purse at each end of the zipper, about 2 inches in from the end.

Attaching the strap to the basketball purse

Attach your chain strap to the snap tape, securing the chain strap in. If you want a regular strap as well, attach it to the chain strap.

Using pliers to push the needle through

4. Secure everything with some stitches

With your needle and thread, sew a few stitches at each of the snaps and at the ends of the zipper. This just provides a little extra reinforcement. You may need to use pliers to help push the needle through the basketball.
