How to Dress Grandpa Core

Move over, Coastal Grandma; this year’s latest trend is Grandpa Core! What does this latest social media fashion craze mean? Think of your warm, fuzzy grandpa and his comfy, practical clothes. Men of a certain age tend to gravitate to a certain style, and there’s no reason why we all can’t enjoy it.

I’m going to show you how to put together a Grandpa Core outfit.

T-shirt and jean basics

Every grandpa has a drawer full of t-shirts, sometimes worn down to threadbare, which harkens back to their days in the Depression and occasions when the going got tough. So grab a classic men’s undershirt in white or grey. Then add a good pair of classic, loose-fitting, or straight-leg jeans without the trendy rips or distressing. Bonus points if they have an elastic waistband!  Shop men’s T-shirts.

Plaid Button-down

Almost every man has a plaid button-down in his closet, usually several. Grandpas typically wear these for every occasion. A flannel, plaid button-down is a double win since grandpas are usually cold all the time due to collagen loss in their elder years. Layer your plaid shirt over your undershirt and make sure it’s pressed and neatly tucked in.  Shop plaid button-down.

Sweater Vests

If there’s one item for the grandpa core trend, it’s an old-fashioned sweater vest. Grandpa probably wore them with a bow tie when he dressed for his working days, but now, in retirement, he probably opts for a more relaxed button vest. Look for a cozy cable knit that looks like grandma made. Again, this keeps the “core” of grandpa core warm because he’s probably cold all the time.  Shop sweater vest.

Accessories

Grandpa can’t leave the house without a well-worn baseball cap, usually to keep the sun off his delicate skin and hide a bald spot. The one place grandpas like to jazz things up is his socks. Men having colorful socks is practically a competitive sport! The bolder, the better, and they’ll often roll their jeans up a bit to show them off. Complete the look with some practical loafers or slip-on sneakers.  Shop fun socks.
