Today, I have a great Valentine’s Day sewing project for you. It’s a lace-trimmed camisole top as part of a sexy women’s pajama sewing pattern.

I used satin fabric for this, trimmed with lace. My measurements will fit a size 38 European. For a larger size, add a total of 2.75 inches (3 cm) to the width.

Tools and materials:

  • Satin fabric
  • Lace trim
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Rolled hem presser foot
  • Serger (optional)
Drafting pattern

1. Draft the camisole pattern

Cut your fabric to 13 inches (32 cm) wide and 52 inches (128 cm) long. Fold it in half widthways and in half again.

Lay it down with the folded edge nearest you. Place a couple of pins through all the layers to hold them together while you cut out the top.

Drafting pattern

Make a mark 2.4 inches (6 cm) along the folded edge from one of the side edges and 5.5 inches (14 cm) up the side edge.

Join the marks with a straight line.

Starting one finger width below the second mark, measure 4 inches (10 cm) down the side edge.

Drafting pattern

Draw a line from the folded edge 5 inches (12 cm) in from the side and 10 inches (25 cm) long.

Join the end of that line to the third mark with a curve.

Drafting pattern

Measure and mark 12 inches (30 cm) down the other side edge from the fold and join it to the end of the curve with a straight line.

Drafting pattern

Taper the same side edge to give a slight curve to the bottom of the camisole.

Cut along the marked lines.

Adding lace trim

2. Add the lace trim

Separate the two parts.

Cut a narrow strip of lace edging, long enough to trim the front neckline of the camisole.

Adding lace trim

Finish all the raw edges with a serger, or using an overlock or zigzag stitch on your sewing machine.

Pin and sew the lace trim to the front neckline with the right sides together.

Adding lace trim

Trim off the excess at each end, about half an inch (1 cm) inside the inner edge of the neckline.

Adding lace trim

Turn the seam to the wrong side and top stitch close to the fold from the right side.

Assembling camisole

3. Assemble the camisole

Turn in narrow hems along the back neckline and sew in place.

Join the side seams, with the right sides together.

Hem the armholes in the same way as you did the back neckline.

Making shoulder straps

4. Make the shoulder straps

Cut two strips of fabric 2 inches (5 cm) wide and at least 15 inches (38 cm) long.

Fold the two long edges of each strip towards the center on the wrong side, then fold the strip in half lengthways.

Making shoulder straps

Sew the long folded edges together.

Repeat for the second strap.

Rolled hem presser foot

5. Hem the lower edge

Swap your regular presser foot for the rolled hem presser foot.

Select a zigzag stitch with a stitch length of 2.5 and a width of 4.

Hemming

Turn up a rolled hem around the lower edge of the camisole.

Attaching shoulder straps

6. Attach the shoulder straps

Pin and sew one end of each strap to the inside of the back point of the camisole.

Try the camisole on and pin the straps in place at the front.

Cut the straps to the correct length and sew them to the front.

This makes a delightful Valentine’s day outfit teamed with silky shorts or loose pajama pants.

You could wear the top as a regular camisole, although you may want to make it a little longer.

Try it in a soft knit fabric for a very different but still sexy look.
