To put it plainly, bucket hats are just fun! I had been wanting to make one for ages but I just never got around to it. The other day, I found an old, torn bucket hat in my house and I thought, why not take it apart and use it as a template to make a new one. I love that I could make a cute bucket hat without the hassle of making or using a pattern.

Tools and materials:

  • Old bucket hat
  • Fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Take apart an old bucket hat

In the first step, I used a seam ripper to deconstruct the old bucket hat so that I could use the pieces as a template for my new one.

Cut the fabric

Next, I pinned the deconstructed pieces onto my fabric.

I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut to get all the pieces I would need for my bucket hat. I cut so that I had the outer pieces and all the lining pieces as well.

The first thing I did was sew the side pieces of the hat together. I then marked center notches on the side piece and on the crown and matched up the notches. I pinned the crown in place and sewed.

Attach the lining

I repeated the same for the lining. I then went ahead and attached the brim to both the outer and lining fabric.

I placed the lining, inside the hat, right sides together, and matched up the seams.

After pinning on the lining, I sewed around the edge of the brim, leaving a small opening so that I could turn the hat right side out later.

I turned the hat right side out and then folded over the lining by the opening and sewed it closed. I pressed the seams to get them nice and flat. I decided not to add lines across the brim but if you prefer that look, go ahead and add them!

I am so happy with how this DIY bucket hat turned out! It was so simple to make and the best part was that I didn’t even need a pattern! Share your thoughts on this DIY project in the comments below!
